End-to-end encryption (Beta)
End-to-end encryption is currently in Beta and off by default — turn it on yourself in settings. Once on, it protects one-on-one text messages; group chats, images, voice messages, and metadata like who’s talking to whom aren’t covered.
End-to-end encryption is currently in Beta and off by default — turn it on yourself under Settings → Privacy & Security → Enable end-to-end encryption (Beta). It has no effect until you do.
What’s protected once it’s on
- Protected: the text content of one-on-one DMs
- Protected: messages in transit between devices
- Not protected: group chats, and media like images or voice messages
- Not protected: who you’re talking to and when (metadata)
Still in Beta — for now, only one-on-one text messages are covered.
How to confirm it’s working
Encrypted messages show up with a purple bubble and a lock icon. On a device that can’t decrypt it, that message shows as encrypted and unreadable.
Why it isn’t on by default
This feature is still Beta, and its coverage isn’t complete yet. We don’t default people into something that isn’t finished — you turn it on with full knowledge of what it does and doesn’t cover. If this matters to you, switch it on.
